How to Reset a Standing Desk (Step-by-Step Guide)

Lassi Vauhkala|

If your electric desk suddenly stops moving properly, a reset is often the first solution to try. Many standing desks may enter a fault state after power interruptions, uneven movement, or sensor detection. When this happens, the desk may refuse to move or only move in one direction. Fortunately, resetting the desk usually restores normal operation.

Why desks need resetting

Electric standing desks use control systems that synchronize both lifting columns. If the system detects uneven movement from column hall sensors or a power interruption, it may require recalibration. This is why reset functions exist.

Common symptoms that indicate a reset may be needed include:
• Desk only moves downward
• Desk stops halfway
• Display shows a reset message
• Desk becomes uneven

Resetting your desk – step by step

The steps below follow the standard reset procedure used by desks that use Jiecang components. Note that the procedure may vary between manufacturers, e.g., different button combinations, but most desks use some kind of reset method.

Step 1 – Press and hold the down button
Press and hold the down button on the handset until the frame reaches its lowest position.
Note: It may take up to 30 seconds before the frame starts moving. You may need to repeat this step a few times.

Step 2 – Release and press again
Release the button for a couple of seconds, then press and hold the down button again.
If your desk’s handset has a display, you may see the letters RST, indicating the table is now in reset mode.

Step 3 – Enter reset mode fully
When the table is in reset mode, release the button for a couple of seconds again, then press and hold the down button once more.

Step 4 – Complete the reset
Keep holding the button until the table moves all the way down and then moves slightly back up. Once the table stops moving, you can release the button.
Your desk has now been reset.

If the reset does not work
If the desk still doesn’t respond during the reset process, the issue may be related to:
• A disconnected motor cable
• A faulty control box
• A damaged handset
• A lifting column problem

At this point, replacing the faulty component may be necessary.

Preventing reset issues
To reduce the need for frequent resets:
• Avoid unplugging the desk during or immediately after adjustment
• Keep cables securely fastened under the desk
• Avoid overloading the desk or placing uneven weight on it

Final thoughts
Resetting a standing desk is quick and often resolves many common issues. Before assuming a mechanical failure, it’s usually a good idea to try resetting the table first.
