Standing Desk Not Working? 6 Things to Check Before Replacing Parts

Lassi Vauhkala|

A height-adjustable desk that suddenly stops working can be frustrating. One moment everything works perfectly, and the next your desk refuses to move. Fortunately, most issues with electric standing desks are relatively simple to diagnose.

Before assuming that the entire desk is broken, there are a few quick checks you can perform. In many cases, the problem can be solved with a simple reset or by replacing a single spare part.

1. Check the power connection

Start with the simplest possibility. Make sure the desk is properly plugged into a working power outlet.

Try plugging another device into the same outlet to confirm that power is available. Also check that the power cable is firmly connected to the control box under the desk.

Loose connections are more common than you might think.

2. Inspect the cables under the desk

Electric desks rely on several cables connecting the controller, motors, and handset. If one of these cables becomes loose or damaged, the desk may stop responding.

Look for:

  • loose connectors
  • damaged cables
  • cables pulled tight by desk movement

Reconnecting a loose cable may immediately restore the desk’s functionality.

3. Disconnect accessories

Some desks include accessories such as USB hubs, cable extensions, or integrated charging ports. In rare cases these accessories can interfere with the control system.

Try disconnecting all accessories and testing the desk again.

4. Perform a desk reset

Many standing desks have a built-in reset or calibration function. This procedure realigns the motors and restores normal operation after certain errors.

The reset procedure usually involves holding down button on the handset until the desk reaches its lowest position and moves slightly back up.

If your desk has a display, you may see messages such as:

  • RST
  • ASR
  • or similar reset indicators

Once the reset completes, test the desk movement again.

5. Check for error codes

Some control panels display error codes that indicate the source of a problem. Common examples include motor communication errors or synchronization issues between the desk legs.

For Jiecang based desks, you can find explanations for the most common error codes in the troubleshooting section on our Deskpart website.

Using error codes for reference can make it easier to decide what to check or replace next, before considering a full repair.

6. Identify the faulty part

If the desk still doesn't move after these basic checks, the issue usually involves one of the following parts:

  • control box
  • handset (controller)
  • motor cable
  • lifting column or it's motor

The good news is that these components are replaceable, and replacing one part is usually far more affordable than replacing the entire desk.

If you're unsure which component might be causing the issue, it can sometimes help to go through a few additional basic checks. On the Deskpart store, we provide simple troubleshooting guides that cover some common standing desk problems and things you can check yourself.

Final thoughts

Most standing desk problems are caused by a single component failure. With basic troubleshooting and the correct spare part, many desks can be restored to full functionality in less than an hour.
